Arab League Condemns Israel’s Recognition of ‘Somaliland,’ Backs UN Drive to Uphold Somalia’s Unity

Arab states are mobilizing international support to reinforce Somalia’s territorial integrity after Israel’s December 26 move to recognize the breakaway northwest region.

Overview

  • An emergency session of the Arab League on Sunday, chaired by UAE envoy Hamad Al Zaa’bi, denounced Israel’s step as null and void and an assault on Somalia’s sovereignty.
  • The council agreed to coordinate with Mogadishu, now a UN Security Council member for 2025–2026, to pursue UN resolutions affirming Somalia’s unity and to discourage any official dealings with regional authorities outside the federal framework.
  • The statement warned of risks to regional stability and navigation in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and the Horn of Africa, and rejected using Somali territory for foreign bases or for any schemes to displace Palestinians.
  • Egypt separately reaffirmed full support for Somalia’s sovereignty and condemned unilateral measures that undermine the country’s territorial integrity.
  • Separately in Washington, policy debate continues over competing postwar Gaza governance and reconstruction models, with pressure on President Donald Trump to choose a course before his December 29 meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
