AquaStar Recalls More Than 85,000 Bags of Shrimp Sold at Kroger in 31 States Over Radioactivity Concern

Authorities are investigating an Indonesian supplier following low-level cesium-137 detections in port screenings.

Overview

  • AquaStar’s voluntary recall covers nearly 157,000 pounds across three items: about 49,920 bags of Kroger Raw Colossal EZ Peel Shrimp, 18,000 bags of Kroger Mercado Cooked Medium Peeled Tail-Off Shrimp, and 17,264 bags of AquaStar Raw Peeled Tail-On Shrimp Skewers.
  • The products were sold June 12–Sept. 17 at Kroger-owned banners including Ralphs, Fred Meyer, King Soopers, Smith’s, QFC and others across 31 states.
  • No illnesses have been reported; FDA notes a detected level of roughly 68 Bq/kg of cesium-137—well below the 1,200 Bq/kg intervention threshold—yet recommends recalls to limit potential repeated exposure.
  • The FDA has an import alert on Indonesia’s PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati as CBP increases screening after detections in containers at ports in Los Angeles, Houston, Miami and Savannah.
  • Consumers are urged not to eat recalled shrimp and to discard or return it for a refund; questions can be directed to AquaStar at 1-800-331-3440, Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. PT.
