Overview

  • After high nitrate levels were detected on June 7, Aqua Illinois warned infants under six months in University Park, Kankakee, Peotone and parts of Crete, Green Garden and Monee townships not to drink tap water.
  • Testing in coordination with the Illinois EPA found nitrate concentrations below the 10 mg/L federal safety limit, prompting the advisory to be lifted Friday.
  • Free bottled water distribution at Aqua’s University Park plant and two other sites ceased once the utility declared water quality safe for all customers.
  • University Park officials, who have faced recurring water issues, are exploring a purchase of local water rights from Aqua Illinois to regain control of the system.
  • Despite the state’s clearance, some residents say they will continue relying on bottled water over lingering concerns about tap quality.
