April Trial Set for Memphis Officers in Tyre Nichols Case

Three former officers accused of murder will face state charges after federal convictions related to Nichols' death.

The state trial for Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, and Justin Smith is scheduled for April 28, 2025, in Memphis.
All three officers have pleaded not guilty to state charges of second-degree murder, aggravated assault, and other offenses.
Earlier this year, the officers were found guilty of federal witness tampering; Haley also faced additional federal civil rights violations.
Two other officers involved, Emmitt Martin and Desmond Mills Jr., pled guilty to federal charges and are expected to change their pleas in state court.
The U.S. Department of Justice has launched an investigation into the Memphis Police Department's practices following Nichols' death.
