Apple's Vision Pro Headset Expected to Launch in Late January

Newly Granted Patent Suggests External Display Could Show What the Wearer is Viewing Inside the Device

  • Apple's Vision Pro headset is expected to launch in the last week of January, according to a report from a Chinese investor news service. The headset will be Apple's first spatial computer and will run on a new operating system, visionOS.
  • The Vision Pro headset will have a starting price of $3,499, but the specifications are not yet known. It will feature two 4k micro OLED displays, over a dozen cameras, and will use Apple's M2 processor.
  • A new patent granted to Apple suggests that the external display of the Vision Pro headset could show what the wearer is looking at inside the device. This could be used in various scenarios, such as checking on what type of content children are consuming on the headset.
  • The Vision Pro's external display, known as EyeSight, will show the wearer's eyes when they are in mixed reality mode, and a colorful pattern when they are fully immersed in virtual reality. However, the patent suggests that the display could also show a wider array of images, such as a 'do not disturb' sign or a virtual scene.
  • The Vision Pro headset will require a fitting at an Apple store, which suggests that the release may be US-only initially. It is currently unclear when the headset will launch in international markets.
