Apple Wallet Now Stores U.S. Passports for TSA Use, With More States Joining Digital IDs

The feature expands Apple’s Digital ID program by letting passport holders verify identity at participating airports through encrypted, on-device checks.

Overview

  • TSA accepts Apple Wallet Digital ID at more than 250 U.S. airports for domestic screening.
  • Only U.S. passports are supported at launch, and the passport-based ID works only domestically and does not replace a physical document.
  • Setup requires scanning the passport photo page and embedded chip plus live selfie verification, with all data encrypted and kept on the device.
  • Apple Wallet driver’s licenses and state IDs are live in 13 states and Puerto Rico, and seven additional states have announced plans to adopt the feature.
  • To present an ID, users double-click the Side Button, hold iPhone or Apple Watch to a reader, and authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID.
