Apple Unveils watchOS 26 with Wrist-Flick Controls and Liquid Glass Redesign

The developer preview introduces motion-based flick gestures with a cross-platform UI update ahead of a public beta next month

Overview

  • The gesture uses the watch’s accelerometer, gyroscope and a machine learning model to interpret a one-handed flick for dismissing notifications, calls, timers and alarms.
  • The wrist-flick gesture works only on Apple Watch Series 9, Apple Watch 10 and Apple Watch Ultra 2.
  • watchOS 26 adopts the new Liquid Glass design language to unify the interface across iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, visionOS and CarPlay.
  • A new Workout Buddy feature delivers personalized spoken motivation while the redesigned Workout app layout provides music recommendations based on the user’s preferences and activity type.
  • watchOS 26 is in a developer preview with Live Translation in Messages and will enter a public beta through the Apple Beta Software Program next month.
