Apple Unveils PROLED XDR Tandem OLED for MacBook Pro

Tandem OLED plus M5-driven pixel compensation promise higher HDR peaks, pro-grade color matching, lower burn-in risk.

Overview

  • Apple’s PROLED XDR pairs two stacked OLED emitters with an M5 Pro/M5 Max display engine to deliver up to 2,000 nits peak, 1,000 nits sustained full-screen brightness, and a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio.
  • The tandem design lets each emitter run at lower current so the panel can reach higher peak brightness with less stress on organic materials and improved efficiency compared with single-layer OLED.
  • Apple’s 20-page technical paper says the M5 display engine continuously adjusts every pixel for content, usage, temperature, and ambient light to keep color and brightness uniform and to mitigate burn-in, but it does not guarantee burn-in will never occur.
  • The PROLED XDR supports Apple CMF 2026, P3 plus Adobe RGB coverage, 16 medical-reference modes, and a hardware calibrator to meet pro color workflows.
  • Preorders opened in early November and units are set to ship starting Nov. 6 with the OLED option priced about $400 above matching Liquid Retina XDR models, a move that could speed wider laptop OLED adoption and reshape panel supply chains led by Samsung Display.
