Apple Unveils iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max With 2nm A20 Pro and Variable-Aperture Camera

The new Pro phones are built to shift more work to on-device AI through a 2nm A20 Pro chip, add a smaller Dynamic Island that supports three Live Activities, with model-specific modem and battery differences.

Overview

  • Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on Wednesday, Sept. 9, and said preorders start Sept. 12 with retail availability on Sept. 18.
  • Both Pro models use the A20 Pro chip built on TSMC’s 2nm process, which Apple says raises CPU and GPU performance and adds neural engines tuned for on-device AI tasks.
  • For the first time on an iPhone, the main camera uses a mechanical variable aperture with multiple settings to let users control light and depth of field for better low-light shots and bokeh.
  • Apple says battery life and charging improve markedly: the iPhone 18 Pro is rated up to 36 hours of video playback and the Pro Max up to 45 hours, and wired charging can reach about 50% in roughly 15 minutes with a high‑wattage adapter.
  • Apple confirmed product splits: the iPhone 18 Pro uses Apple’s new C2 modem while the Pro Max uses a Qualcomm modem, both models come in four colors (Burgundy/ Dark Cherry, Glacier/Sky Blue, Black, Silver), and a signed Reference Image feature will help verify photo provenance with region-specific limits.
