Apple TV to Add Dolby Atmos to Live Formula 1 Coverage

Apple and Dolby say the new spatial audio mix will place engines, team radio and pit sounds around viewers to make races feel more immersive at home.

Overview

  • Apple and Dolby announced Wednesday that Dolby Atmos will debut on Apple TV’s live Formula 1 coverage with the U.S. Grand Prix weekend beginning October 23, 2026.
  • The Atmos mix will include team radio, commentary, engine noise, on-track battles and pit-lane activity to create a three-dimensional sound field for viewers with compatible equipment.
  • Viewers will get the Atmos feed on supported Apple devices, Dolby-enabled TVs, soundbars and home theaters, and Apple will render Atmos as Spatial Audio for qualifying AirPods models when used with Apple TV 4K.
  • Dolby says existing trackside microphones and sensors can be used for the Atmos rollout, which should reduce the need for new circuit hardware, but Apple has not confirmed whether every session in Austin or all future races will receive the Atmos mix.
  • The move builds on Apple’s 2026 U.S. F1 rights and prior Dolby Vision 4K broadcasts and signals Apple’s strategy of using premium audio and video to differentiate its selective live sports investments.
