Apple to Pay $261,283 in EPA Settlement Over Hazardous-Waste Violations at Santa Clara Facility

Inspections prompted by public complaints led to fixes the agency says bring the site into RCRA compliance.

Overview

  • The EPA announced the agreement on Nov. 18 covering Apple's Scott Boulevard semiconductor site in Santa Clara, California.
  • Inspections in August 2023 and January 2024 found failures in waste characterization, land disposal restriction notices, storage permitting beyond 90 days, container labeling and management, daily tank inspections, and control of emissions from a solvent waste tank.
  • Apple addressed the findings by modifying solvent waste processes and installing an air emissions control device.
  • The settlement includes a $261,283 penalty, and the EPA reports the facility now complies with federal hazardous-waste requirements under RCRA.
  • The facility borders apartment buildings, a resident filed a health complaint, Apple said the issues posed no environmental risk and were quickly resolved, and a separate 2016 state action fined the company $450,000 over e‑waste handling.
