Apple to Enable Cross-Platform Encrypted Messaging with RCS Update

Apple confirms plans to integrate end-to-end encryption for RCS messages across iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and watchOS in future updates.

Apple will support end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) messaging for Rich Communication Services (RCS) in upcoming software updates, enhancing privacy for cross-platform communication.
The GSM Association (GSMA) has updated the RCS standard to include E2EE using the Messaging Layer Security (MLS) protocol, enabling secure messaging between Android and iPhone users for the first time.
Apple adopted RCS messaging last year with iOS 18.1, replacing SMS for texts to Android users, but the initial implementation lacked encryption for cross-platform messages.
The new E2EE feature will prevent third parties, including carriers and state actors, from accessing message content, aligning RCS security with existing platforms like iMessage and Google Messages.
There is no confirmed release timeline for the update, but it is expected to undergo extensive testing before being rolled out to Apple devices.
