Overview
- Apple is targeting a limited mainland China launch of Apple Intelligence with the iOS 27.3 update in December, and CEO Tim Cook said the company will run an initial test later in October.
- China’s Cyberspace Administration registered Apple’s generative AI on July 15, 2026, and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology updated network-access permits on Sept. 29, 2026 to cover Apple Intelligence and Alibaba models.
- The initial China release will include core tools such as Live Translation, Writing Tools, notification summaries, Genmoji (original), and the Clean Up photo tool while excluding Siri AI and Apple’s Image Playground and limiting some text-generation features.
- To meet local rules Apple will rely on Alibaba’s Qwen and Tongyi Wanxiang models for language and image capabilities and on Baidu for search and visual features, with cloud queries processed on Chinese infrastructure rather than the same models Apple uses elsewhere.
- The approvals and required guardrails give Chinese regulators a continuing role in approving model updates, which may speed a basic offering into the market but leave Apple less competitive versus local phone makers that already ship more advanced on-device AI and create new questions for businesses and users about device eligibility and data handling.
