Overview
- Apple confirmed it will start developer testing of Apple Intelligence in China on Wednesday as part of the iOS 27.3 beta and plans a public iOS 27.3 release in December.
- The initial China launch will not include Siri AI and will instead combine Apple’s models with locally approved partner models such as Alibaba’s Qwen for selected experiences.
- Apple will limit the first rollout to supported iPhone models — iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, iPhone 16 and later, iPhone Air, and iPhone Duo — with iPad and Mac support pending additional approvals.
- The announced feature set for the initial release includes Live Translation in Messages, FaceTime and Phone, Writing Tools (rewrite, proofread, summarize), Visual Intelligence, Clean Up in Photos, Genmoji, notification and email summaries, Smart Reply, and audio transcription summaries.
- The staged, device‑restricted approach reflects China’s regulatory and infrastructure requirements and could slow Apple’s parity with domestic phones that already ship advanced on‑device AI while shaping how quickly features expand to other Apple platforms.
