Apple Sets iOS 26 Release for Sept. 15 With Liquid Glass Design and New Privacy Tools

Apple is gating Apple Intelligence to recent Pro-class hardware, leaving older supported iPhones with a lighter feature set.

Overview

  • The update is scheduled to go live on September 15 at about 10 a.m. PT, with installation available via Settings > General > Software Update.
  • iOS 26 supports iPhone 11 and later models, dropping the iPhone XS, XS Max and XR from the compatibility list.
  • Apple Intelligence features such as enhanced Siri integration with ChatGPT and visual intelligence are limited to newer devices including iPhone 16 models, iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, and iPads and Macs with A17 Pro or M1 and later.
  • Users will be offered a choice between iOS 26 and iOS 18.7, the latter providing security updates only, and Apple recommends backing up, freeing storage and updating apps before installing.
  • New capabilities include the Liquid Glass interface, a dedicated Messages folder for unknown senders, Safari’s advanced fingerprinting protection by default, online ID verification in Wallet and broader on-device AI features.
