Apple Said to Ready Sub-$1,000 MacBook With iPhone Chip for Early 2026

A Bloomberg report describes active testing of a new budget notebook designed to lure schools from Chromebooks.

Overview

  • The project, code-named J700, is reportedly in active testing at Apple and in early production with overseas suppliers.
  • Bloomberg reports the laptop will use an A-series iPhone processor and a lower-end LCD with a screen slightly under 13.6 inches.
  • Apple is expected to price the model well below today’s $999 entry MacBook Air to target students, casual users, businesses and iPad shoppers who prefer a laptop.
  • It would be the first consumer Mac powered by an iPhone chip, with internal tests said to show performance above the M1 used in recent years.
  • Apple has not commented on the unannounced device, which reporting indicates is slated for the first half of 2026 to directly challenge entry-level Windows PCs and Chromebooks.
