Apple Reportedly Planning Multi-Year Overhaul of Mac Lineup

The staged program would roll out a 2nm M6 chip followed by an M7 series to raise raw performance and support more on-device AI workloads.

Overview

  • Bloomberg and reporter Mark Gurman published the reports on Thursday saying Apple plans a phased Mac refresh that begins around October 2026 and runs into 2027 and beyond.
  • The first reported device to get the new 2nm M6 chip is a 14‑inch MacBook Pro and the next iMac, which would skip an M5 iMac generation if the plan is accurate.
  • A new MacBook Ultra with an OLED screen and the first MacBook touchscreen is expected as early as autumn 2026 but is said to use current M5 Pro and M5 Max chips rather than the M6.
  • Compact desktops are due short‑term chip updates with the Mac mini possibly offered in M6 or M5 Pro variants and the Mac Studio initially using M5 Max/M5 Ultra before a reported M7 Ultra update around 2028.
  • Apple is also testing a MacBook Neo 2 that would boost RAM from 8GB to 12GB and swap an A18 Pro for an A19 Pro in a likely spring 2027 release, a move that could make annual entry‑level updates more common and shift more AI work onto users' machines.
