Apple Releases New AirPods Developer Beta Firmware

The developer-only build prepares AirPods to support iOS 27 features with firmware that cannot be downgraded to public releases.

Overview

  • Apple issued a new developer beta firmware build 9A5314b (release 9.0.314) for AirPods on July 7, delivering the update to multiple models including AirPods Max 2, AirPods Pro 3, AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4.
  • The firmware is intended to enable and test iOS 27-era features such as a redesigned AirPods settings menu, a slider for Adaptive mode, a custom EQ control and compatibility with Apple’s new Siri AI.
  • Developers must opt in through an “AirPods Beta Updates” toggle in the AirPods Bluetooth settings on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac running the compatible developer OS, and updates install automatically when earbuds are charging and near the paired device.
  • Apple warns that devices enrolled in the beta cannot be rolled back to earlier public firmware and will remain on the beta track until Apple issues a newer public release.
  • Testing now focuses on developer feedback ahead of a planned public AirPods beta this month and a wider rollout timed to iOS 27’s full release, and testers are advised to use secondary AirPods or devices because beta firmware can cause functional regressions.
