Apple Releases First iOS 26.1 Developer Beta With Liquid Glass Tweaks and New Language Support

The test build targets readability concerns following user discomfort reports from iOS 26’s new visual design.

Overview

  • In Photos, the video player now has a white border and reacts less to the background to aid legibility, and Safari’s bottom tab bar is enlarged.
  • The Phone app gains soft‑shadowed keypad buttons and Calendar now shows fully filled, rounded event entries, extending the Liquid Glass aesthetic in select places.
  • Apple Intelligence adds support for Danish, Swedish, Turkish, traditional Chinese and Vietnamese, and AirPods real‑time translation adds Japanese, Korean, Italian and both traditional and simplified Chinese.
  • The update is available through the developer channel today with a public beta expected in one to two weeks, and Apple cautions that backups made on iOS 26.1 may not restore reliably to devices still on iOS 26, including during iPhone 17 upgrades.
  • iOS 26’s Liquid Glass has drawn reports of dizziness and nausea from some users, and Apple points to Accessibility options such as Reduce Transparency, Increase Contrast and Reduce Motion to lessen the effect.
