Apple Opens iOS to Game Streaming Services

Developers can now submit a single app for their entire game catalog, improving the gaming experience on iOS devices.

  • Apple has changed its developer rules to allow game streaming services on iOS, meaning developers can now submit a single app that offers a catalog of games.
  • Previously, developers had to submit one streaming app per game, making it difficult for services like NVIDIA's GeForce NOW and Microsoft's xCloud to get on iOS.
  • Apple's decision comes after the UK regulator, the Competition and Markets Authority, announced its decision to resume an investigation into the distribution of cloud gaming services through app stores on mobile devices.
  • Apple's new rules also allow developers to use the company’s In-App Purchase system for all the mini-games, mini-apps, and more within the larger app.
  • Apple's decision is expected to improve the gaming experience on iOS devices, as native apps generally provide a smoother experience than browser-based gaming.
