Apple Notes Adds Markdown Import and Export on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS

Support focuses on interoperability rather than in‑app rendering.

Overview

  • On iPhone and iPad, users can import .md files by sharing to the Notes icon or by using the new Import to Notes option in iPadOS 26’s File menu.
  • On macOS 26 (Tahoe), Notes imports Markdown via File > Import to Notes, including the ability to bring in whole folders with their structure preserved.
  • Export is available as Export as Markdown from the iOS/iPadOS share sheet or via File > Export As Markdown on Mac, with multi‑note export that does not recreate folder hierarchies.
  • Imported Markdown retains core elements such as headings, links, and lists, yet Notes does not render Markdown styling or provide a live preview inside the app.
  • Support covers common syntax, so advanced features like tables, footnotes, or diagrams may not translate reliably, though the change streamlines workflows for developers, writers, and students.
