Apple Marks 2013 Mac Pro and Late-2010s Devices as Vintage, Obsoletes AirPort Line

It underscores Apple’s policy of granting up to two years of limited repair support for discontinued products before cutting service entirely

Also added to Apple’s vintage list this month are the 2019 iMacs, the 11-inch and 12.9-inch 2019 iPad Pro models.
The iconic "trash can" 2013 Mac Pro is officially vintage.

Two years from now, the trash can Mac Pro will become "obsolete."

Overview

  • Apple added the 2013 Trash Can Mac Pro, 2019 13-inch MacBook Air, 2019 iMac, 2018 11- and 12.9-inch iPad Pros and the 128GB iPhone 8 to its vintage list as of July 11, making them eligible for repairs if parts remain available.
  • The second-generation AirPort Express, 2 TB and 3 TB AirPort Time Capsules and the 802.11ac AirPort Extreme moved to Apple’s obsolete list, ending all hardware servicing and parts support.
  • Under Apple’s lifecycle policy, products become vintage five years after last sale and obsolete two years later, reflecting parts availability and repair capacity.
  • The 2013 cylindrical Mac Pro, discontinued in December 2019 and succeeded by the modular “cheese-grater” design, highlights the challenges of unconventional hardware that limits internal upgrades.
  • Vintage devices retain repair options at Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers, whereas obsolete products are fully unsupported regardless of user demand.
