Apple Launches Tap to Pay on iPhone in Hong Kong

Merchants use partner-enabled apps on compatible iPhones to accept encrypted contactless payments processed by the Secure Element.

Overview

  • Adyen, Global Payments, KPay, and SoéPay are the first platforms offering the capability in Hong Kong starting today.
  • The service accepts Apple Pay, other digital wallets, and contactless cards from American Express, JCB, Mastercard, UnionPay, and Visa.
  • No extra hardware is required, with transactions completed via NFC and support for PIN entry and accessibility features.
  • Use requires a partner-enabled iOS app on an iPhone 11 or later running the latest version of iOS.
  • Apple says the rollout targets sectors such as taxi, retail, food and beverage, and professional services, following a similar activation in Singapore earlier this month.
