Apple Launches Passport-Based Digital ID in Wallet for TSA Use at 250+ U.S. Airports

The beta supports domestic TSA verification only, not international travel.

Overview

  • Acceptance begins at more than 250 TSA checkpoints, with availability varying by user and airport as readers and devices receive server-side updates.
  • Creating an ID involves scanning the passport photo page and NFC chip, then completing a live selfie with head-movement checks before Wallet issues the credential.
  • Data stays encrypted on device, Apple says it cannot see when or where the ID is used, and Face ID or Touch ID is required to present it without handing over the phone.
  • The feature works on iPhone and Apple Watch for eligible devices (iPhone 11 or later or Apple Watch Series 6 or later with current software) with a valid U.S. passport and two-factor authentication enabled.
  • Apple plans acceptance by select businesses and apps for identity and age verification, building on limited driver’s-license support in 12 states and Puerto Rico.
