Apple Launches Passport-Based Digital ID in Wallet for TSA Use

The public beta uses passport-chip scanning to create an on-device ID accepted at select TSA checkpoints for domestic flights.

Overview

  • Digital ID is rolling out in the United States and is accepted at TSA checkpoints in more than 250 airports for domestic travel only, with physical passports still required for international trips and border crossings.
  • Setup requires scanning the passport’s photo page and embedded NFC chip, taking a selfie, and completing guided head movements to verify identity.
  • At checkpoints, users double-click to open Wallet, hold iPhone or Apple Watch near the reader, and authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID without unlocking or handing over the device, with only requested data shared.
  • Apple says passport data is encrypted and stored on-device, and the company cannot see when or where an ID is presented or what information is transmitted.
  • The launch is a public beta with phased activation and some TSA readers not yet updated, and the passport-based approach expands Wallet ID beyond the 12-state driver’s license program with broader use cases planned for businesses, apps, and online age checks.
