The shift reflects Apple’s effort to counter a projected slump in iPhone sales with government-backed discounts delivered directly in Beijing and Shanghai

Overview

  • Apple has joined China’s national digital product subsidy program through its own online store and brick-and-mortar outlets for the first time
  • Customers in Beijing ordering from Apple’s online shop and shoppers at any of Shanghai’s eight Apple retail stores can claim up to 2,000 yuan in discounts on select iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches and Macs
  • Devices priced below 6,000 yuan are eligible for a subsidy of up to 500 yuan, while certain higher-end Mac models qualify for discounts capped at 2,000 yuan
  • Until now, Apple products on the subsidy scheme were only available through third-party platforms such as JD.com and Alibaba’s Taobao marketplace
  • Apple’s participation aims to help offset an expected 1.9 percent decline in smartphone shipments in mainland China in 2025 amid fierce competition from Huawei, Xiaomi and other domestic brands
