- Apple announced the feature on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, and will ship Reference Image with the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max later this month.
- In Reference mode the phone captures signed sensor telemetry that Apple’s Private Cloud Compute turns into an unalterable reference image stored in photo metadata while leaving the picture pixels unchanged.
- Users who enable Reference mode get both a normal editable photo and a separate metadata reference that carries a unique ID and can be shown to verify the original capture.
