Apple Geoblocks ByteDance Apps for iPhones Located in the U.S.

Archived Apple guidance ties the restriction to a 2024 law limiting distribution of apps controlled by designated foreign adversaries.

Overview

  • Reports from WIRED, 9to5Mac, and MacTrast confirm U.S.-located iPhones now receive a message saying “This app is unavailable in the country or region you’re in” when attempting to download or update ByteDance apps, even with valid Chinese App Store accounts.
  • The restriction targets ByteDance-owned Chinese apps such as Douyin and Doubao, while apps from other Chinese developers are not subject to the same block according to current reporting.
  • TikTok, CapCut, and Lemon8 remain available on the U.S. App Store under the TikTok USDS Joint Venture following January’s divestiture, but availability for other ByteDance titles remains uncertain.
  • Apple updated App Store legal terms to permit IP-based location checks for legally restricted apps, and Apple and ByteDance declined to comment as TikTok USDS did not respond to inquiries.
  • An archived Apple notice says installed ByteDance apps will remain on devices but cannot be redownloaded or updated in the U.S., raising functionality and security concerns for affected users.
