Apple Details Reference Image Sensor System to Verify iPhone Photos
The company says the opt-in mode locks and signs raw sensor pixels, uses Private Cloud Compute for verification, and applies a post-quantum signature to produce an anonymous, verifiable image.

- Apple has published technical details for Reference Image and offers the feature as an opt-in mode on iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max that signs raw pixels from the main camera at the moment of capture.
- The system builds a chain of trust at manufacture by generating a unique sensor key at first power-on, certifying the public key in the device manifest, and binding that key to the Secure Enclave to block component swapping.
- Captured raw data is stored as a secure digital negative on the device and is only finalized after upload to Apple Private Cloud Compute, which verifies signatures, processes the image, and issues a composite signature that includes a post-quantum component.
