Apple Debuts Touch MacBook Pro With PROLED XDR and High‑End M5 Chips

The company says the new hardware is meant to run very large AI models on‑device and will require developers to add touch optimizations for macOS apps.

Overview

  • Apple unveiled its first touch‑enabled MacBook Pro at a Wednesday event, opened preorders in late October and set an on‑sale date of November 6 for China and other markets.
  • The MacBook Pro uses a dual‑layer stacked OLED panel Apple calls PROLED XDR with touch sensors embedded in the panel and is offered in 14‑ and 16‑inch sizes with M5 Pro or M5 Max processors.
  • Apple confirmed top M5 Max configurations can be ordered with up to 128GB unified memory and up to 16TB internal storage on select models, and the company says the M5 Max can run very large local AI models for tasks like creative work and code analysis.
  • At the same event Apple refreshed the 24‑inch iMac with M6 chips and the iPad mini with an A20 Pro chip, published detailed China pricing and launch windows, and moved the iMac’s 2.5Gb Ethernet into an optional power‑adapter accessory for lower tiers.
  • Apple published a list of third‑party apps slated for touch updates and released official design assets for developers, but many touch adaptations are due later this year so full app support will roll out over time.
