Overview
- Apple stopped signing iOS 26.6.2, which is the server verification that used to allow restores to that iOS 26 build.
- Apple’s signing system requires a server-side check before an iOS image can be installed, and unsigned builds fail that verification and cannot be installed through Finder or iTunes.
- iOS 26.7 for iPhone is distributed only as an over-the-air update and has no official restore image, so it cannot be used as a restore target for devices already running iOS 27.
- As a result, iPhone users who have upgraded to iOS 27 have no official way to revert to iOS 26 while devices that have not yet upgraded can still receive the OTA 26.7 update where applicable.
- Apple says it unsigns older builds to limit installs of versions with known security flaws, a practice that reduces exposure to vulnerabilities but shortens the window for users to roll back after an update.
