Apple Brings Live Rewind and Siri Recap to Apple Watch Developer Beta

The developer beta tests privacy-preserving on-device detection, encrypted condensed-text pipelines, gesture activation, scheduling controls, limited hardware support.

Overview

  • Apple added Live Rewind and Siri Recap to the watchOS 27.3 developer beta on Tuesday, making the two ambient-audio features available to developers for testing ahead of a public beta and an expected December release.
  • Live Rewind shows a short text snippet of the last roughly 15 seconds of speech when a wearer double-presses the Digital Crown and plays a chime and animation; the snippet auto-deletes quickly unless the user saves it.
  • Siri Recap runs in the background to create a short title and bullet-point summary of recent conversations rather than full transcripts, and summaries auto-delete after seven days unless saved by the user.
  • Apple says the system uses S11-powered on-watch detection and a Secure Enclave to keep raw audio inaccessible, converts audio to condensed text on the paired iPhone, sends that text encrypted to Apple’s Private Cloud Compute for summarization, and deletes data from PCC after use.
  • The features are opt-in, include visible and audible cues, scheduling and Control Center toggles, start in English only, require S11-equipped Series 12/Ultra 4 watches paired with an iPhone 16 or later, and are not available to users under 13.
