Overview
- Apple confirmed a developer beta that will begin testing Apple Intelligence in China on November 4 and a public iOS 27.3 release planned for December.
- The initial feature set announced for China includes Writing Tools, Visual Intelligence (photo queries and edits), Live Translation with supported AirPods, Clean Up in Photos, Genmoji, notification summaries, priority notifications, and Smart Reply.
- Apple will not bring the new Siri AI to China in this release but will add Siri improvements such as Type to Siri and better handling of follow-up requests.
- To comply with Chinese rules Apple is integrating local models—notably Alibaba’s Qwen with select support from Baidu—limiting the rollout to newer iPhone models and requiring the device and Siri language be set to English or Simplified Chinese.
- The move follows months of regulatory work and means Chinese users will get some generative and visual AI tools sooner while broader device support and more advanced Apple Intelligence features remain subject to further approvals, which could affect how Apple competes with local phone makers that already ship stronger on-device AI.
