App Matches Telehealth for Treating Urinary Incontinence in Women Veterans, Trial Finds

Researchers say the veteran-tailored program could extend care to women facing access barriers through the VA's expanding telehealth network.

Overview

  • A randomized clinical trial of 244 female veterans found a smartphone app and expert video visits both reduced urinary incontinence symptoms.
  • Participants using the MyHealtheBladder app reported earlier symptom improvement, but outcomes were not clinically different from telehealth at 12 weeks.
  • The study, published Sept. 16 in JAMA Network Open and led by Dr. Alayne Markland, enrolled women with an average age of 53.
  • MyHealtheBladder delivered daily sessions over eight weeks covering pelvic floor exercises, bladder strategies, fluid management and self-monitoring.
  • A booster video consultation offered after eight weeks did not improve results, underscoring the potential to scale remote care as VA telehealth use has grown from 300,000 veterans in 2010 to 2.3 million in 2022.
