APNORC Poll: Trump Holds Near 40% Approval as Economic and Foreign Policy Ratings Lag

The findings underscore steady overall numbers despite mounting concern over costs and overseas interventions.

Overview

  • Overall, 40% approve and 59% disapprove of President Trump’s job performance, a level that has changed little since early 2025.
  • Only 37% approve of his handling of the economy, up from December’s low, while about six in ten say he has made the cost of living worse in his second term.
  • Approval on immigration stands at 38%, down from 49% in March, with Republican approval slipping from 88% in March to 76% in the new survey.
  • Roughly six in ten disapprove of his foreign policy, 56% say he has gone too far using U.S. military force abroad, and 45% want less U.S. involvement in foreign conflicts.
  • The APNORC survey of 1,203 adults was conducted Jan. 8–11, shortly after a fatal ICE shooting in Minneapolis and recent U.S. actions involving Venezuela, with a ±3.9-point margin of error.
