AP Analysis Maps Where 2.5 Million Border Arrivals Settled

The figures highlight concentrated destinations, led by Florida per capita, with the New York area topping totals.

Overview

  • The Associated Press obtained CBP destination records for nearly 2.5 million people who crossed the border or used the CBP One app from May 12, 2023 to Jan. 18, 2025.
  • Miami led U.S. metros per capita with 2,191 arrivals per 100,000 residents, followed by Fort Myers, Salt Lake City and Denver, while the New York metro logged 300,650 arrivals, the most by volume.
  • Florida led states per capita at 1,271 arrivals per 100,000 residents, while Texas had the largest total number at 336,620, ahead of Florida, California and New York.
  • California saw relative decline as no metro there reached 1,000 arrivals per 100,000 residents, and the influx reflected migrants from over 100 countries, including large numbers from Venezuela.
  • More than 900,000 people entered legally through CBP One before its January 2025 shutdown, and releases have plummeted since mid‑2024 policy changes, with Border Patrol reporting only seven releases since February.
