AOL to Shut Down Dial‑Up Internet on Sept. 30, Ending 34 Years of Service

The move leaves the last users to migrate to mobile, satellite or Microsoft’s MSN Dial‑Up.

Overview

  • AOL confirmed the cutoff date and said it will retire its legacy Dialer software and the AOL Shield browser alongside the access service.
  • AOL’s parent company is Yahoo, and the company will continue offering the paid AOL Advantage plan for support and identity protection.
  • Dial‑up use has effectively vanished in Germany and much of the EU, with U.S. figures dwindling to a small residual base after measurable counts as recently as 2019.
  • The service once defined early home internet access, but slow speeds and phone-line limitations gave way to broadband, LTE/5G and satellite.
  • Users who still rely on dial‑up are being directed to modern options, with Microsoft’s MSN Dial‑Up remaining available where broadband is absent.
