Anvisa Bans Ozone-Laced Supplements and Orders Seizure, Recalls Guzzini Soup Plates

The agency says the targeted items violate Brazil’s requirement for prior safety authorization.

Overview

  • Brazil’s health regulator prohibited the commercialization, manufacture, distribution, advertising and use of all OZT/Ozonteck supplements and ready-to-drink energy products that contain added ozone, and ordered their seizure.
  • Anvisa states ozone has no safety evaluation for use as an ingestible ingredient in supplements or energy drinks and is currently authorized only for water disinfection.
  • The agency also flagged the company’s marketing for unapproved therapeutic and health claims, including assertions of benefits for digestive, liver, eye and cardiovascular function.
  • All lots of Guzzini plastic soup plates identified by code 229596, manufactured by Refemabim, were recalled after tests found unacceptable melamine migration into food.
  • The enforcement follows last month’s prohibition of 69 ozone-based hair cosmetics from Ozonteck, and reporters said the companies did not respond to requests for comment.
