Overview
- Anthropic announced on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, that it has merged Claude Chat and Claude Cowork into a single interface called “one Claude” and begun a staged rollout to Pro and Max users on web, desktop and mobile.
- The company introduced Claude Docs and Claude Slides in beta and folded Claude Design into conversations so users can draft, edit, collaborate and export documents and presentations from any chat.
- Under the new setup Claude will automatically decide whether a task needs simple chat or agentic capabilities and by default will ask before taking actions, with user settings to allow more autonomous execution.
- Reporters and analysts note that agentic workflows make tool calls and run multi-step reasoning that typically consume far more tokens than simple chat queries, which could increase compute usage and costs for users.
- Anthropic says existing Cowork chats, projects, artifacts, connectors and skills will remain available, Team and Free plans will get the update later, and enterprise administrators will receive at least 30 days’ notice before changes reach organizational accounts.
