Anthropic Rolls Out ‘Computer Use’ for Claude Code on Mac in Research Preview

The feature turns Claude from a chat tool into a desktop operator with explicit user controls.

Overview

  • Anthropic introduced Computer Use in Claude Code, a capability that lets the AI operate a Mac like a person by opening apps, clicking through interfaces, running tests, and even building and fixing software.
  • Access is limited to Pro and Max subscribers on macOS using Claude Code version 2.1.85 or later in a controlled research preview.
  • Users enable the feature inside an interactive Claude Code session by running the command “/mcp” to activate the built‑in “computer-use” server and by granting macOS Accessibility and Screen Recording permissions.
  • Anthropic says Claude can complete full developer loops from the command line in a single prompt by writing code, compiling it, launching the app, clicking through it, finding a bug, fixing it, and verifying the fix.
  • Safety measures include per‑session approval for which apps Claude can control, a lock that allows only one session at a time, detailed activity logging, and instant abort via the Esc key or terminal commands, with guidance to use it for routine tasks like forms, research, spreadsheets, files, and email.
