Antalya Wildfire Triggers Tourist Evacuations and Spreads to Muğla and Aydın

Strong winds and months of drought have driven a fast-moving blaze that has drawn a major aerial and ground response.

Overview

  • The fire ignited Saturday evening in the Kundu area near Belek, threatening coastal resort properties.
  • Emergency services deployed more than 800 personnel supported by 14 aircraft and 20 helicopters.
  • Authorities ordered evacuations from hotels as well as parts of central Antalya and the Aksu district.
  • Firefighters said gusts pushed the flames from Antalya into the neighboring provinces of Muğla and Aydın, and a major coastal road was closed.
  • President Recep Tayyip Erdogan described the situation as “a truly great disaster” as Turkey continues a summer of extensive wildfires, with recent reports of hundreds of blazes nationwide.
