Anta Leaders Lift 48-Hour Strike in Cusco as Services to Machu Picchu Resume

Regional mediation prompted a suspension following Anta’s protest over census work tied to the Choquequirao boundary dispute.

Overview

  • Anta representatives ended the stoppage after talks convened by the Cusco regional government and a pledge to pursue a solution to the limítrofe conflict with La Convención.
  • UGEL Anta confirmed the return to normal school activities, and Ferrocarril Trasandino authorized rail operations on the Cusco–Llantaytambo–Machu Picchu route.
  • The INEI stated that the 2025 national census serves statistical purposes only and that demands related to territorial demarcation fall outside its legal mandate.
  • During the strike, protesters set up as many as three blockades on the Panamericana Sur, leaving cargo and passenger vehicles stranded for more than eight hours before the road was cleared.
  • The regional tourism office had warned against visiting routes such as Humantay Lagoon and the Salcantay trekking path, which are now set to operate without restrictions.
