ANPEC Opposes IEPS Hike Proposal as Basic Basket Rises in September

Citing rising food costs alongside a remittance slump, the group says a tax increase would strain households.

Overview

  • ANPEC’s September monitoring put the Canasta Básica Alimentaria at 1,979.15 pesos, up 12.79 pesos or 0.65% month to month.
  • The steepest product increases were onion (+8.86%), green tomato (+7.70%) and potato (+4.27%), with items like toilet paper and laundry soap also higher.
  • Tlaxcala, Baja California Sur, Chiapas, Sonora and Guanajuato showed the largest basic‑basket increases in the nationwide sample of 44 products across more than 200 outlets.
  • The group warns the IEPS proposal includes an 87% rise on soft drinks, extending the tax to “light” beverages, and roughly 20 pesos more per pack of cigarettes, risking a shift to contraband and informality.
  • ANPEC points to a 33% post‑COVID rise in food prices and a 20% drop in remittances this year as evidence that additional indirect taxes would burden households and threaten small merchants.
