Anonymous Threat Left at Ex-Sempio Lawyer’s Office as Brescia Probe Intensifies

Brescia prosecutors are preparing to question lawyers over unexplained Sempio cash withdrawals.

Overview

  • A note reading in dialect, “It’s better that you keep quiet,” assembled from newspaper cuttings and marked with a cross, was left under the doormat of Massimo Lovati’s Vigevano office Saturday night.
  • Lovati’s attorney, Fabrizio Gallo, displayed the message on television and filed a report with the Carabinieri, calling it a death threat.
  • Gallo says he has noticed worrying episodes, including a car possibly following him, and he has considered stepping aside over safety concerns.
  • Lovati is expected to be heard by Brescia prosecutors in an inquiry into suspected corruption in judicial acts and cash payments, and he has indicated he will not invoke professional secrecy.
  • Prosecutors are tracing about €35,000 in 2016–2017 withdrawals linked to the Sempio family and plan to interview lawyers Federico Soldani, Simone Grassi and Lovati, while the reporting does not establish a direct link between the threat and the inquiry.
