Overview
- Fans discovered that the urn holding Anita Mui’s ashes was gone from a columbarium niche at Po Lin Monastery on Lantau Island on July 18 and alerted the family.
- The family filed a police report the same day and a police spokesman confirmed on Oct 11 that a report about a suspected missing item at the monastery was received.
- Nearly three months after the discovery the urn remains missing and the family issued a statement on Oct 10 saying the slow progress has caused them great distress.
- Mui’s brother, Peter Mui, has offered a HK$50,000 reward for information leading to recovery and the family has asked visitors to provide car-cam footage, photos or videos to the Lantau district crime squad.
- Po Lin Monastery has declined to comment while police say the Lantau district crime squad is handling the case, no arrests have been made, and fans have urged the monastery to review security at the site near the Tian Tan Buddha.
