Anglesey Coroner Rules 99-Year-Old’s Death Accidental After Care-Home Tea Scald

The determination attributes fatal pneumonia and cellulitis to complications from the burn.

Overview

  • An inquest heard that Margaret Eluned Roberts, a registered blind resident at Glan Rhos nursing home, spilled hot black tea on September 22, 2024.
  • Staff applied first aid, an ambulance was called at 7:51pm and arrived about two hours later, and she was transported to Ysbyty Gwynedd.
  • Hospital clinicians initially assessed the burn at 8% then 4% of body surface, kept it below the 10% threshold for burns-unit admission, lanced blisters, dressed the wound, and discharged her.
  • Consultant physician Dr Abdul Azu testified that reduced mobility after the scald contributed to a chest infection and her decline before her October 28 death.
  • The coroner listed old age, asthma, and ischaemic heart disease as contributory factors, and the family questioned the practice of serving hot tea to a visually impaired resident.
