Anduril, HD Hyundai Unite on Modular Autonomous Vessels as First Prototype Takes Shape in Korea

The move positions the pair for the Navy’s Modular Attack Surface Craft competition.

Overview

  • The companies announced a partnership to design and produce autonomous surface vessels aimed at U.S. Navy needs.
  • A dual-use prototype is currently being fabricated in Korea to validate designs, integrate propulsion and power, and automate ship functions ahead of its maiden voyage.
  • Anduril is refurbishing the former Foss Shipyard in Seattle for low-rate assembly, integration and testing, with future vessels planned for U.S. construction.
  • The effort targets the Navy’s MASC program, which is using a Defense Innovation Unit–style competition to field a family of reconfigurable unmanned craft.
  • The ASV features an open-architecture, modular design with interchangeable payloads and a central superstructure, and Anduril says the team aims to scale to dozens of ships per year.
