Andrzej Bargiel Reports First Oxygen-Free Ski Descent From Everest’s Summit

Nepal’s tourism ministry says the claimed feat awaits independent verification.

Overview

  • Bargiel reached the 8,849‑metre summit on Monday and skied to Camp 2, then completed the descent to base camp the next day, according to his expedition organizers.
  • His team and sponsor Red Bull released photos and video of the ascent, summit and descent, and his press office said he set off without using fixed ropes or ladders.
  • Seven Summit Treks said he navigated the Khumbu Icefall on skis, with route-finding at times assisted by a drone piloted by his brother.
  • The tourism ministry in Kathmandu said it has been informed by the team and will require a full report and supporting evidence before confirming the claim.
  • Previous full descents, including Davo Karnicar’s in 2000, used bottled oxygen; this would mark the first continuous descent without it, and follows Bargiel’s aborted attempts in 2019 and 2022.
