Andrzej Bargiel Becomes First to Ski Down Everest Without Supplemental Oxygen

Bargiel completed the descent during a rare autumn Everest push.

Overview

  • His team and the expedition organiser said he skied continuously from the summit without using bottled oxygen.
  • Bargiel summited on Monday and posted a video declaring his plan to descend on skis, with additional footage showing him sliding down fresh snow.
  • Heavy snowfall extended his time above 8,000 metres to about 16 hours without supplemental oxygen.
  • He skied to Camp 2, spent the night there, and reached base camp on skis the next day, according to Seven Summit Treks.
  • The feat contrasts with the first full summit-to-base ski descent in 2000 by Davorin Karnicar, which used oxygen, and follows Bargiel’s 2018 ski descent of K2 under his Hic Sunt Leones project.
