Andrzej Bargiel Becomes First to Climb and Ski Down Everest Without Oxygen

Drone guidance through the Khumbu Icefall helped make the oxygen-free descent possible.

Overview

  • After leaving Base Camp on September 19, Bargiel reached the summit on September 22 following a 16-hour push from Camp IV in the death zone.
  • He skied a planned line through the Khumbu Icefall with assistance from an aerial drone piloted by his brother, Bartek.
  • He split the return into stages, spending the night at Camp II before skiing to Base Camp the next day, according to Seven Summit Treks.
  • While more than 7,000 climbers have summited Everest, only around 200 have done so without bottled oxygen, highlighting the rarity of the effort.
  • The 37-year-old previously abandoned Everest attempts in 2019 and 2022 and became the first to ski K2 in 2018, drawing praise this week from Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
